It can be difficult for famlies to find an experienced caretaker for someone with special needs. Respite is the supervised temporary care of a child or adult with developmental disabilities. Respite service may not be provided as daycare during times when the usual caregiver is working. Because family needs differ, a variety of Respite services are available.

Care takes place in the consumer's home or in the home of a registered provider. Consumers may choose to participate in community activities with their provider. In-home Respite may be scheduled on a regular basis or as needed, and may vary from a few hours to extended stays. If you have questions about In-home Respite services contact your Family Service Coordinator (FSC), or contact our Respite Specialist, Melanie Luedeman.

The Arc regularly schedules Group Respite in accessible locations in Cedar Rapids. Current Group Respites include:

The GetAway program was established by The Arc of East Central Iowa in 1999. GetAways are a Respite option in a group setting, where day-long, overnight, or weekend activities are offered and supervised by trained staff. The staff to participant ratio is contingent upon the participants and their needs.
