The fit bits have been going crazy!

A great deal of effort has been put forth over the last day and a half. We have returned all belongings back to their home and the sand bags have been taken away. While not our original intent, we are more organized and the office is starting to look great.

Program Updates:

Day Habilitation
Due to the uncertainty of re-entry into the building, Day Hab will be meet at its normal time at The Arc offices at 680 2nd St SE on Monday October 3rd. We are hopeful this will only be for one day. A communication will be sent on Monday confirming Tuesdays location.

Arc Site Based Programs – All will resume Monday October 3rd
* Before and after school programs
* Choice
* All group activities will resume as normal as well

It is hard to put into words how grateful we are that the waters did not reach our building. It is even harder to put into words the outpouring of support before and after the evacuation. Many were faces we were meeting for the first time and just jumped in and helped get the job done, many were friendly faces who support The Arc through thick and thin, and then there were truly dedicated employees who were very focused on resuming our mission. To all of them a heartfelt thank you!

We are so fortunate to be part of a community that works toward the common good. It is humbling to see what can happen when people remove all bias and work together to achieve a common goal. The water did not make it to our main location and it appears we will escape with no damage.
As of today’s news conference however both locations are still in the evacuation area with re-entry still to be determined. As soon as we are given the go ahead we will begin the process of getting our programs set up and established. We will communicate additional details as they are known.
Update on services. All site based programs will be cancelled through Friday, September 30th. This includes:
  • Before and after school programs, CHOICE
  • Friday Flix
  • Day Habilitation (Vet’s Memorial)
The following activities are still scheduled:
  • In-Home services – can continue as long as the DSP and the client are both out of harm’s way.
  • Getaway to Camp Io-Dis-E-Ca – all participants will be contacted. Drop off has been moved to Lindale Mall in the parking lot near Planet X.
As a reminder Annual Meeting & Awards scheduled for Monday, 9/26 has been postponed.
We are making progress….stay tuned!

We could not be more grateful to the many volunteers who came to support our preparation for the flood. We literally would not have made it without the assistance of so many people who gave of their time and energy. We feel confident we will be leaving here tonight having done everything in our control to protect against mother nature.

The Arc of East Central Iowa

Who We Are

Rotating pictures of people from The Arc's summer activities

The Arc of East Central Iowa is a non-profit agency that supports over 800 individuals with intellectual disabilities as well as their families. Determined parents came together and demanded more for their children with intellectual disabilities. Due to their advocacy, institutions are now the exception and not the norm. Parents were heard and Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) were enacted to provide services that promote independence, community integration, and removal of barriers. The Arc is an authorized agency for HCBS services and it accounts for the majority of services we provide.

We serve counties in east central Iowa including; Benton, Cedar, northern Johnson, Jones, Iowa, Linn, and Tama. Our goal is to provide services and supports that reduce barriers, provide resources and referrals and promote access to community based life. We are dedicated to making sure the services we provide meet the needs of those we serve both today and look ahead to anticipate future needs.
